The Importance Of Play With Cats

When it comes to any animals behavior (Including humans) the concept of nature vs nurture comes into play.  The debate between which one is more important or has a bigger effect on an animal is for another time.  Today, I want to talk about nurture.  Particularly, the discussion will revolve around domesticated felines and the importance of play with cats.

For our feline friends, playing helps with weight.

Interactive playing not only enlivens cats, it helps maintain healthy body weights.  An active body is key to getting the pounds off or for maintaining a proper weight throughout life.  That fact is no different for cats.

Play strengthens bonds.

The relationship between an owner and a cat are stronger when the human takes the time to communicate with their feline companion in fun ways.  You have to speak their language in order to bond.  Play is the way to do it.

Behavior problems disappear where play is involved.

A happy cat is a well played out cat.  Play becomes a positive outlet for aggression and any negative energy.  Treat your feline friend right and when you come home from work, they will be lounging on their comfortable cat tree or in their window perch instead of destroying the drapes or your new fabric couch.

Types of play

Feline play time can be such an amazing experience, if given the right tools.  It does not have to be expensive.  A piece of paper crumbled up into a ball and thrown out in front of them can make a cat go crazy with excitement.  They love to pounce on stuff and stalk things.  A little jingling ball or a stick with feathers on it will make them super happy.  They also love to chase.  Laser lights spinning around out in front of them are a great tool for this purpose.

Conclusion

It may seem that your cat does not need you as much as a dog might.  They are really independent and do their own thing most of the time but, they love to play.  If cats had a love language, play would be it.  So, go love on them.
