The Healing Power of Plants: An Introduction

The healing power of plants: An Introduction: Lavender
The power to heal the ailments found in our world has been experienced across the board since the beginning of time, by way of plants. There are great properties in every aspect of them.  From the petals, pollen, and stems of flowers to the fruit, bark, leaves, and sap of trees.  Even the very essence of all involved have been used in various cultures.  This brings us to The Healing Power of Plants:  An Introduction.

The healing power of plants is significant to every living creature.  An animal in the wild will eat plants in order to regulate homeostasis.  Even domestically, you may have found your dog eating grass as he/she tries to find that which will help them regain proper gastrointestinal function.  So, what is all this in a nutshell?

Phytotherapy

Phyto therapy, defined to be plant therapy, incorporates aromatherapy, herbalism, and homeopathy. Every part of the plant can be used for healing purposes. Even the soil and the water are involved.

Aromatherapy

In aromatherapy, the oil and essence of the plant are used.  An essential oil, which can be used to simmer in a burner, are created.  They aid in headaches and insomnia, among other things.  Water can also be added to the essential oil , making it a hydrosol.  Hydrosol can be sprayed on fabrics to make them smell better.  This type of therapy is often used with animals for separation anxiety.  In Veterinary medicine, hydrosols are used to create fear free environments.  For example, a towel can be sprayed with “feliway” and placed on the carrier of an aggressive cat.  This chemical is made of feline pheromones’ and, as the cat breathes it in, they are calmed.

Herbalism

Herbalism is the medicinal use of plants, flowers, stems, and roots.  Used for treating patients and their illnesses by way of homeopathy.  I will speak frequently on Herbalism in my healing power of plants series.  It is the therapeutic use of plants in alternative medicine.
